...the gift of giving

Posted by

trying to decide what to give to someone as a thank you or for their special day or just because, can be challenging.  there is always the chance the the umpteenth mug or scarf will be shelved or re-gifted without guilt.  and truly, when little thought goes into the final choice, you were better off not giving anything at all and just saying 'thank you'.

when we go into market to buy for our site, we typically bring a wish list to guide us through the overwhelming amount of product to search from.  and just like your holiday list of family, friends, officemates, and obligations, TheBarn considers various interests of its audience.  for the foodies, there are field stone slabs and beautifully photographed recipe books; for the entertainer, hand-thrown ceramic platters, pewter pitchers and belgium linen; for the wine lover, rough-cut emerald bottle stoppers and vintage wine barrel platters to serve their cheese compliment; for the person who enjoys furnishings, organic furniture tonics and embroidered state pillows; and for that person who has everything and needs nothing - we know at least one, a 1930's african waterbuck trophy and a hand-woven panama hat.  the possibilities are endless.  but if we sit back and listen, generally we find the solution on what to give.

and then, when you are all shopped out and just cannot finish your list, the ultimate gift is to give of your self.  give in sharing your time to prepare a favorite meal or holiday dish.  invite those difficult to please or rarely seen folks for a seat at your table and enjoy a chance to get caught up with time lost to schedules - block out a couples of hours because it will be another six months before you see them again.  one of TheBarn's latest recipe finds is a savory bread pudding with bacon and farmstead cheese topped with tomato jam from 'harvest to heat' and a dish of sautéed spinach in garlic.  'harvest to heat' is a book of recipes with a collection of chefs, farmers and artisans from across the states making the connection of farm to table much more accessible.

it can be said that there is an art to giving, but the gift of giving can be summed up in a quote from chavez - '...the people who give you their food give you their heart'.  now, let's go make our list...
